Smith Scores First Bobcat Goal in Win over Fairmont

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team defeated Fairmont State 3-1 on the road Wednesday night, with goals from freshman Catherine Smith and seniors Lexi Pate and Audra Curtin.

The Bobcats put pressure on the Falcons as soon as the match began, with sophomore Toni Fiocco-Mizer having the first attempt at goal just a minute into the match. Frostburg earned a corner kick a few minutes later that helped set up the first goal, as the corner was curled in and bounced around a few times before finding the foot of Smith, who lashed home before keeper Taylor Kennedy could react for her first collegiate goal. Frostburg found themselves in a familiar position at the 12-minute mark with another corner, this time swung in by sophomore Lela Clark, finding the head of Pate, who was able to flick the ball into the back corner for a quick 2-0 lead. Pate and freshman Keely Knotts would end the half with a shot on goal apiece.

Fairmont came out strong in the second  half, pressuring Frostburg high up the pitch, and their pressure paid off with a penalty that Alyssa Weaver was able to slot home to cut the deficit to 2-1. Just one minute later, Knotts had a great double chance to give the Bobcats a two goal cushion, but Kennedy made great saves on both attempts. Less that seven minutes later, Frostburg was awarded a penalty kick of their own for a handball inside the penalty area. Curtin stepped up, fired low and left, and got the Bobcat lead back to two. Frostburg would hold the Falcons without a shot the rest of the way for the final score of 3-1.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 5-2-1, while the Fighting Falcons fall to 2-4. Frostburg returns to action back home on Sunday, October 3 at 5:30 PM as they face Davis & Elkins. For current information please check frostburgsports.com.
