Men's Soccer Defeats Falcons in Feisty Affair

FROSTBURG, Md.The Frostburg State men's soccer team took on the Falcons of Notre Dame (Ohio) in a thrilling, scrappy 1-0 victory.

The match started off with both teams trading possessions and getting shots away, with the Falcons forcing senior Joel Assal into three excellent saves to preserve the 0-0 score line. It would be FSU that took the lead, however, with some opportunistic play from sophomore Alex Retzos. A free kick was taken by freshman Matt Garrett on the halfway line, which Falcon keeper Jack Groeneveld came to collect, but he bobbled the ball, allowing Retzos to swoop in and score and put Frostburg ahead 1-0 going into the half.

The Bobcat cause was helped early in the second half, as just 12 minutes into the period, Carlos Almeida was shown a second yellow card for a bad foul, forcing the Falcons to play with 10 men the rest of the way. NDC would still threaten the Frostburg goal several times, with Assal making another fantastic save with five minutes on the clock to preserve his clean sheet. The game would get marred at the very end, as another two Falcons were sent off inside of one minute, finishing the game with eight players.

Senior forward Malek Shedid, freshman midfielder Zach Harpel, freshman defender Caleb Dell, sophomore midfielder Alex Grasso, and midfielder Andrew Tenorio all recorded a shot on the day. Eight total yellow cards were shown between the two sides, with the three red cards shown to NDC for a total of 11 cards.

With the win, the Bobcats move up to 4-2-1 while the Falcons fall to 3-2 on the season. Frostburg's next opponent will be back home against Charleston (W. Va.) on Wednesday, September 29 at 7 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com
