FROSTBURG, Md.- Frostburg State Women's Soccer earned a 3-0 win over West Liberty on a rainy Wednesday evening at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
FSU started out on the front foot, as freshman Carolyn DeSena charged down the right wing and fired a shot that was tipped wide by Olivia Montgomery in goal. Senior Audra Curtin then had a brilliant chance to put the Bobcats in front as she raced into the box, but ended up poking her effort wide.
Â
It was Curtin that ended up giving Frostburg the lead on a penalty 14 minutes into the half. Sophomore Toni Fiocco-Mizer and senior Lexi Pate played a nice one-two down the left wing, and as Fiocco-Mizer ran to the center of the box, she was brought down for a penalty. Curtin stepped up and sent Montgomery the wrong way to give FSU the 1-0 lead.
Â
The Bobcats continued the pressure, with Curtin firing another shot and freshman Keely Knotts unluckily seeing her curled effort cannon off the crossbar. West Liberty's best opportunity of the game came from some nice wing play by Anne Williams, who placed a perfect cross on the head of Kaelyn Oskin, but her effort went sailing over the crossbar to keep the game at 1-0.
Â
Frostburg then had chances on 35 minutes to double the lead, with Fiocco-Mizer's effort smothered by Montgomery at the edge of the box and the rebound falling to sophomore Caroline Burton, but her shot was cleared off the line with Montgomery out of position. FSU would end up scoring just before the half, as a long punt from sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Bilger found its way to sophomore Ashley Chew, who touched the ball forward to Fiocco-Mizer as she finished with aplomb to give both Bilger and Chew an assist.
Â
The Bobcats started the second half on the front foot, with shots from Fiocco-Mizer and sophomore Hannah Thompson both forcing Montgomery into saves. The pressure would pay off 15 minutes into the half, as Fiocco-Mizer found space in midfield and drove forward, playing a wonderfully weighted ball into Pate, who took one touch and finished past Montgomery for the final 3-0 score line.
Â
Neither side created many more meaningful chances, as both teams used several substitutions, giving players some key minutes. Frostburg outshot West Liberty 20-4, with 13 shots on target to the Hilltoppers' 2.
Â
With the win, FSU improves to 4-2 on the year, while WLU falls to 2-2-1. The Bobcats return to action Sunday, September 26 back at home against Notre Dame (Ohio) in a semifinal rematch from the Spring season. For more information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.Â
