GREENSBURG, Pa.- Frostburg State Field Hockey narrowly lost its opening game of the season, falling 2-1 to Seton Hill.

The first quarter started out with the Bobcats on the front foot, as senior Taylor Hackett and freshman Macy Layfield both were able to get shots away but fired wide. Frostburg's defense held SHU without a shot in the period.

Sophomore Heidi Van Dyk would get a chance to put FSU ahead in the second quarter, however her effort was saved by Griffin goalkeeper Emma Jorgensen. Two minutes later, Seton Hill would score the first goal of the game off a penalty corner. As the ball came to the top of the arc, junior goalkeeper Madison Manalansan made a save on an initial shot, however the rebound came to Jade Taylor, who fired into an empty net for a 1-0 lead.

FSU would keep up the pressure, as junior Talyor Henderson and Van Dyk again were able to shoot, however their efforts would only go wide as Frostburg trailed at the half. FSU would continue their pressure in the third quarter, with Henderson and Layfield getting opportunities off corners, but still could not trouble the Griffin goal.

A hectic minute ensued with six minutes to go in the quarter, as senior Meaghan Szkalak had a shot saved, then Layfield was twice denied by netminder Shannon Mccormac. It would be those two Bobcats that got FSU back in the game, as the Bobcats were awarded a foul just outside the arc. The ball was fired in to Szkalak, who smartly turned to find an open Layfield in front of the cage, scoring her first collegiate goal. Van Dyk would have one more shot saved at the end of the third to go into the final quarter tied 1-1.

Just 40 seconds into the fourth quarter, Van Dyk had an early shot but put it wide. The Griffins then scored what would turn out to be the winner, as Sarah Morgan fed Haley Brenny to give them the 2-1 lead. Freshman Olivia Wenzel tried to force the game to overtime with under two minutes on the clock, but saw her effort saved by Mccormac, as the Griffins came away with the victory.

Van Dyk and Layfield both finished with five shots, with Layfield putting three on goal to Van Dyk's two. Â FSU outshot the Griffins 15-3, with FSU getting seven shots on goal to the Griffins' three.

The loss puts FSU at 0-1 on the season, while the Griffins start 1-0. The Bobcats return to the field Wednesday, September 8 at No. 6 ranked Millersville. For more information stay tuned at
