WHEELING, W. Va.- Frostburg State Women's Soccer earned a hard-fought 2-1 road victory over Wheeling on Sunday afternoon.
Â
FSU started on the front foot, with sophomore Lela Clark getting a couple shots away within 15 minutes. After a couple Wheeling substitutions, the Cardinals worked their way into the game as Kenadee Burgoyne forced sophomore Ashley Bilger into three saves. Clark fired off another couple shots before the Bobcats took the lead on a wonderfully curled effort by sophomore Caroline Burton. Senior Audra Curtin corralled the ball at the edge of the 18-yard box and laid it off for Burton to curl into the top-right corner from 20 yards out.
Â
Frostburg would fire off another three shots, but Wheeling would end the half forcing Bilger into another save. The Cardinals would continue their momentum into the second half and equalized just five minutes in on a goal from Mary DiFonzo. FSU would respond just six minutes later, as some pressure up the pitch from freshman Keely Knotts resulted in a blocked clearance that Clark latched onto and volleyed home for a 2-1 Bobcat lead.
Â
FSU continued the pressure for the next 10 minutes, with three shots to WU's zero. Wheeling would come back with three shots of their own, with the closest coming on a strike from Linda Obare that hit off the crossbar. Both teams would trade shots on goal, as both goalkeepers were forced into saves. The Cardinals would force Bilger into one more save but could not equalize as Frostburg earned the 2-1 win.
Â
The Bobcats narrowly outshot Wheeling 19-17, with each team putting nine shots on target. FSU improves to 3-2 on the year while the Cardinals fall to 1-3. Frostburg returns to the pitch Wednesday, September 22 where they are back at Bobcat Stadium to face West Liberty at 7:30 p.m. For more information and updates keep posted at frostburgsports.com.
