CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Frostburg State volleyball team finished off the Vulcan Invitational with games against Shippensburg and Bloomsburg on Saturday. The Bobcats fell to Shippensburg at the start of the day 3-1(16-25, 28-26, 28-26, 25-23) and finished against Bloomsburg 3-1(23-25, 25-18, 21-25,25-13).
The Bobcats started the match against the Raiders with a kill from freshman AJ Thompson. Frostburg then went on a run to balloon the lead to 9-1, capped off by an ace from sophomore Bianca Smalls. The Raiders pushed back on set point, scoring five straight points until Thompson put the set away with a kill.
The second set was a back-and-forth contest throughout. After two straight points from Shippensburg, FSU opened their scoring on a point from sophomore Beverly Braun. The lead in the set changed hands multiple times before evening up at 25-25. The Bobcats had two looks at set points after kills from Thompson and then Braun, however the Raiders were able to score three points in a row to finish things off at 28-26.
The third set finished much like the second, with the Raiders edging out the Bobcats 28-26 again. Momentum played a big part in the third with both teams having long scoring runs. First, the Raiders put up seven points in a row to make the score 18-15 in their favor, followed by a scoring rally while facing set point for the Bobcats. FSU scored six straight points, three of which were service aces by Braun, to have a set point of their own. After a kill from sophomore McKaily Thomson-Moran to tie the set at 26-26, the Raiders took the set on two attack errors.
The fourth set again could have gone in favor of either team. After exchanging leads, the set was evened up on a kill from sophomore Hayley Delor making the score 20-20. From there the Bobcats took a lead 23-20 before surrendering five straight points to end the match in Shippensburg's favor. Frostburg dropped to 0-7 with the loss, while SU improved to 3-5.
The second game of the saw the Bobcats facing Bloomsburg and again winning one set in the match.
