FROSTBURG, Md.- Frostburg State Men's Soccer stayed undefeated on the year, winning against West Liberty 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium. It was a cagey affair, as there were eight yellow cards shown in the game, five for the Hilltoppers and three for the Bobcats.
Â
WLU got the first shot of the game away, a tame effort that senior goalkeeper Joel Assal easily collected. With the next shot of the game, Frostburg took the lead off some good work from graduate Randy Putnam down the right wing 14 minutes into the game. The midfielder tried to send in one cross that was sent back to him, and on his second cross he found senior Malek Shedid in the center of the box, who powered his header into the top right corner for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Assal would make a fine save with just under a half hour gone in the first half, coming out to smother a shot from Vitor Otsuka. The Bobcats would get a couple opportunities in the half, with freshman Galo Cappelletti and sophomore Alex Retzos getting shots away, but the half would end 1-0.
Â
FSU almost doubled their lead right away in the second half, as freshman defender Matthew Garrett came forward on a set piece, but his effort was well saved by Noah Underwood in goal. Freshman Zach Harpel would get another chance on goal at the 15-minute mark, but Underwood again was there to save.
Â
Just three minutes later, Assal made the save of the game for FSU, as Liam Toman was played through on goal, but was thwarted as Assal came out to make the sprawling save and preserve the clean sheet. The teams would go back and forth in possession through the last half hour of the game, but neither side created another meaningful chance, giving FSU the win. Assal finished with three saves on three shots on goal as Frostburg still has not allowed a goal on the season.
Â
The Bobcats improve to 2-0-1 on the year and still have not allowed a goal, while the Hilltoppers fall to 2-2. FSU is back on the pitch Wednesday, September 15 as they travel to Alderson Broaddus for a 7:30 p.m. tilt. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.Â
