Bobcats Fall Short in Home Games to Hilltoppers

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team fell short during their double at home Monday evening against the West Liberty Hilltoppers. The first game finished with a score of 3-1 and the second game 7-3.
 
The brings the Bobcats to 21-10 on the season and the Hilltoppers to 26-11.
 
West Liberty earned their first run during the top of the first from Kat Donzella. Their second run came in the top of the fourth on a Donzella homerun. The Hilltoppers last run came the next inning from an unearned advance to home from Riley Conkle bringing the score to 3-0.
 
The Bobcats were able to get on the board during the bottom of the seventh when junior Kennadie Batchelor hit a single, sending sophomore Brianna Powell to the home plate and bringing the final score of the game to 3-1.
 
Sophomore pitcher Shawna Leonard earned four flyouts, six strikeouts and 11 groundouts during the first game.
 
During the second game, the Bobcats opened the scoring in the bottom the first inning. Senior Sam Carver flied out to center field, allowing senior Kat Treff to tag and go home.
 
The Hilltoppers earned their first run in the top of the third after Donzella stole third and scored on the throw bringing the score to 1-1. Frostburg was quick to answer in the bottom of the third when senior Aliyah Ramey batted a single sending Junior Ava Gnibus to the home plate, followed by an unearned run from Treff (3-1).
 
West Liberty added a run to their score in the top of the fourth from Makayla Blair and pulled ahead of the Bobcats with four more runs in the top of the fifth from Taylor Bonnett, Sidney Little, Laral Saunders, and Conkle (6-3).
 
The final run of the evening came during the top of the sixth when Hilltopper Bonnett hit a homer, bringing the final score of 7-1 in favor of West Liberty.
 
First year pitcher Sydney Theobald faced 31 batters and had three strikeouts, four groundouts, and six flyouts. Senior pitcher Emily Talbert faced nine batters with one strikeout and five flyouts.
 
The Bobcats return to action for a doubleheader at home against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. The first game is set to being at 2:00pm, for more information go to www.frostburgsports.com
