FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State softball team suffered their fourth straight loss Tuesday at Bobcat Field, losing both ends of a doubleheader to WV Wesleyan. Game one ended in five innings 10-2, with Wesleyan then coming back to win 4-3 in game two.
Wesleyan would start out on the front foot in game one, plating nine across in the first inning, helped out by four Frostburg errors. They would get another run in the second on a home run from Kiley Turner to get a 10-0 lead.
Frostburg had threatened in the first and second, getting leadoff batters aboard, but the hitters that followed weren't able to generate the necessary offense. Senior Taylor McCarty fixed that in the bottom of the third, launching her third home run of the year into left-center after a leadoff walk to fellow senior Kat Treff to start the inning to get FSU on the board 10-2.
Neither team would be able to score in the final two frames, as first-year Sierra Sanderson came on in relief of sophomore Shawna Leonard at the end of the first inning, allowing just two runs in 4.1 innings of work. The game ended on the eight-run mercy rule in the fifth.
In game two, neither team was able to generate much offense the first few innings. Both teams would threaten with runners on base, but weren't able to score them.
It was FSU that finally broke the game open in the fifth inning. Treff got a leadoff single and was moved to second on a sac bunt from Sanderson. Senior Sam Carver flew out to right as Treff moved to third with two outs. McCarty got another big hit, driving a double to the wall in left-center to score Treff and give FSU their first lead of the day.
Wesleyan would answer with a run in the top of the sixth, but FSU would retake the lead in the bottom half. Senior Aliyah Ramey clobbered a solo shot to straightaway center for her seventh home run of the year, giving FSU a 2-1 lead going into the final frame.
A win wasn't to be, however, as Wesleyan strung together five straight hits after a leadoff error, plating three runs across to take a 4-2 lead. Frostburg attempted a comeback, with Treff hitting a one-out triple and scoring on an RBI single from Sanderson, however the next two batters couldn't come up with the necessary hits, with Wesleyan earning the sweep.
The losses drop Frostburg to 21-12 on the year, while Wesleyan improves to 16-10. FSU is back in action on Friday, April 30 for a road trip to Charleston (W.Va.), with another doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m. For more information head to frostburgsports.com.
