WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.-Â The Frostburg State baseball team earned a split on the road in West Liberty, winning game one 3-1 before falling on a walk-off home run in game two 7-6. The split puts the Bobcats at 9-20 on the season, while WLU now stands at 16-15. Â
Â
In game one, both teams were held scoreless the first three innings, as junior Andrew Smith battled West Liberty's Logan Grimm on the mound. Frostburg would have a chance to take the lead in the top of the fourth, as they had the bases loaded with two outs, but junior Josh Netterville could only ground into a fielder's choice to end the Bobcat threat. Â
Â
The Hilltoppers would take the lead in the bottom half of the fourth, as Smith found himself in a bases loaded jam with just one out. Zach Hawkins singled through the left side to give the Hilltoppers the lead 1-0. First-year Nate Vermillion came on in relief and got Colton Coss to ground into a double play to end the inning and keep FSU within a run. Â
Â
Frostburg would repay that faith by tying the game up in the next half inning, as junior Jack Maruskin doubled to right field to lead off the fifth. Senior Mitch Fyffe would get Maruskin to third on a sac bunt, then junior Bryce Jackson brought Maruskin home on a sac fly to center field. Â
Â
Both teams were held scoreless without much threat over the next inning, before the Hilltoppers pressured FSU in the bottom of the sixth. Vermillion gave up a leadoff walk and was replaced by Maruskin on the mound. Maruskin would give up another walk before striking out the next two batters. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance and another walk loaded the bases with two outs. Maruskin got Coss to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning with the score still knotted 1-1. Â
Â
After two quick outs to start the seventh inning, Fyffe drew a walk and stole second, bringing Jackson to the plate with a runner in scoring position. The junior blasted a homer to right-center to put FSU ahead for the first time in the game 3-1. Maruskin would keep WLU off the board to close out the seventh and pick up his first collegiate win in his fifth appearance on the mound. Â
Â
In game two, the Hilltoppers took an early lead on an RBI single from Ty Helmke in the bottom of the first. FSU would respond with a solo shot from Smith in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. WLU would respond right back in the bottom of the second with an RBI double from Jake Probst to retake the lead 2-1. Â
Â
Again, FSU would respond in the next half inning, as Smith got his second RBI of the day on a single to score sophomore Hayden McLaughlin from second and even the game at 2-2. WLU would again take the lead back in the bottom of the third on a two-out three-run home run from Ross Salvatori. Â
Â
Frostburg would scratch one back in the fourth, as Fyffe was able to score on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a double and advancing to third on an error. Â
Â
Neither team was able to score until the top of the seventh, when the Bobcats took their first lead of the game. Jackson and graduate Ryan Roell would hit back-to-back one-out singles to bring up Smith, already with two RBI on the day. The junior launched his second home run of the day into right-center to put FSU ahead 6-5. Â
Â
First-year Nicholas Botsaris came on to try and close out the game, getting Helmke to strike out for the first out. Brian Campbell got a single, bringing up Kaden Blomquist, who hit a walk-off two-run shot to win the game for the Hilltoppers 7-6. Â
Â
Smith finished his day 4-5 at the plate with two home runs and five RBI.Â
