Bobcats Bounce Back with Late Run to Split Doubleheader

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – Frostburg State baseball split its doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan on the road Wednesday evening. The Bobcats fell 16-6 in game one, but scored a run in the top of the seventh to win game two 2-1.

Frostburg struck first in game one, as sophomore Jack Lawrence singled home senior Mitch Fyffe with the game's first run in the top of the second. Wesleyan would respond with a pair in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. FSU would tie things back up in the top of the third, as junior Jack Maruskin scored after junior Andrew Smith reached on an error.

After that point, WVWC broke out the bats, scoring five times in the fourth, six times in the fifth, and three times in the sixth to blow the game open. Frostburg would push a run across in the fifth on a Smith sacrifice fly, and would score again in the seventh on a two-run double from first-year Nick Trey and an RBI single from first-year Danny Berckman.

Game two featured strong pitching from both sides. Frostburg would break through in the third inning, as a double from junior Bryce Jackson allowed Maruskin to score to make it 1-0. West Virginia Wesleyan would answer right back in the bottom of the third, as an RBI single from Geovani Sostre knotted things up at 1-1.

Frostburg would be held in check over the next three innings, only having two runners reach base over that span. Wesleyan tried to translate that success on the mound to run production, as they chased Trey from the game after 4.1 innings. First-year Nate Vermillion came on with two outs and a runner at second in the bottom of the fifth but induced a ground ball to end the inning.

FSU would take the lead in the top of the seventh inning. First-year Chase O'Dell worked a leadoff walk and would work his way to third base after a sacrifice bunt and a flyout. With two outs, Maruskin hustled down the line on a grounder to shortstop and beat out an infield single, allowing O'Dell to score to make it 2-1 Frostburg. Vermillion would finish the job with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to give Frostburg the victory.

Frostburg stays on the road this weekend, as they head to South Euclid, Ohio to open a four-game series against The Notre Dame Falcons. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
