Frostburg Fall in OT to Fifth-Ranked Griffins

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team lost a hard-fought battle Friday afternoon falling in overtime to the #5 Seton Hill Griffins by a final score of 12-11. The Bobcats were led by junior Jake Bowman with three goals and two assists.
 
The loss puts Frostburg at 5-1 on the season, while the Griffins move to 5-1.
 
The Griffins got on the board first scoring a goal 47 seconds into the game. Frostburg quickly answered with a goal from Bowman assisted by graduate Paul Ruppert before scoring another goal from senior Jason Clinton off an assist from graduate Mike Sipes to take a 2-1 lead. Seton Hill scored the next three to take a 4-2 lead with 7:33 left in the first quarter. Junior Tanner Donaldson scored off an assist from Sipes to put the Bobcats down one at 4-3.
 
Sophomore Bubba Love got on the scoresheet netting his first goal of the day to tie the game at 4-4. The Griffins scored the next two goals to take a 6-4 lead. Bowman answered with a goal with 8:15 left in the second quarter to put FSU down one at 6-5 before Ruppert netted a man-up goal off an assist from Bowman tying the game at 6-6. The Griffins scored with two minutes left in the half to take a 7-6 lead, putting FSU down by one going into halftime.
 
In the third quarter of play, Seton Hill outscored the Bobcats 4-0 to increase their lead to 11-6.
 
Frostburg did not go away without a fight outscoring the visitors 5-0 in the final quarter of play to tie the game and force sudden death overtime. Clinton scored to open the quarter on a man-up goal off an assist from Bowman. Love scored his second of the day before Bowman netted a goal to put the Bobcats down two. Clinton then scored to cut the Griffins lead to one at 11-10. Ruppert scored with 1:44 to play to tie the game at 11-11 and force overtime.
 
Seton Hill won the opening overtime faceoff, taking the ball all the way to the cage scoring the game-winner five seconds into the sudden death period capturing the 12-11 win.
 
The defense was led by graduate Garrett Colvin with five caused turnovers and one ground ball, while senior Shawn Winans recorded one caused turnover and four ground balls. Graduate goalkeeper Jack Marks recorded six saves, while senior Sam Natvig went 12-24 at the faceoff dot.
 
The Bobcats return to action on Tuesday, April 6, as they travel to Wheeling to take on the Cardinals in the ECC vs. GMAC Challenge Cup. Game time is set for 7:00 pm. For more information go to www.frostburgsports.com.
