FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State softball team split their Saturday doubleheader with Concord, winning game one 5-2, before dropping game two 12-5.
Shawna Leonard took the circle in game one, holding the Mountain Lions scoreless the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, junior Ava Gnibus was it by a pitch, then seniors Sam Carver and Taylor McCarty drew walks to load the bases. Gnibus would score on a wild pitch, with Carver and McCarty advancing to second and third. Senior Aliyah Ramey came up with two outs and hit a bloop single to right field that ended up turning into a triple, bringing in Carver and McCarty to give FSU a 3-0 lead.
Â
In the top of the third, Concord would plate two runs, one on a wild pitch and another on an RBI single to bring them within one at 3-2. FSU would capitalize on a Concord error in the fourth, as junior Kennadie Batchelor hit a ground ball to shortstop Jenna Witt, but her throw was low to third base, allowing first-year pinch-runner Brianna Munday to score from second.
Â
Carver would plate the final run of game one, lofting a solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the fifth, ending the score at 5-2. Leonard earned her eighth win of the season, which was her eighth complete game.
Â
Concord would come out motivated in game two, jumping out to a 9-0 by the top of the fourth inning. The Bobcats wouldn't go down without a fight, as they scored five in the bottom half of the inning. McCarty got the offense started with a leadoff single and was driven in by Ramey's fifth homer of the year. Sophomore Brianna Powell came up next and laced a double to left-center, bringing up first-year Ryann Darling. With one swing of the bat, Darling got the Bobcats to within five at 9-4, with her first career Bobcat home run. Batchelor would draw a walk in the next at-bat, advancing to second on a wild pitch. The next two Bobcat hitters couldn't muster a hit, leaving it to Gnibus to drive Batchelor home on a two-out double to get the score to 9-5.
Â
Concord would score three runs in the top of the sixth, as FSU was held scoreless the final three innings to end the game 12-5.
The split takes Frostburg to 16-7 on the season, while Concord now sits at 11-17. The Bobcats wrap up their weekend home series Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader against Glenville State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m., for more information head to frostburgsports.com.
