FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team pulled off a dominating win for the final home game of the season against Davis & Elkins, winning by a final score of 4-1. The win moves the Bobcats to 5-1-1 on the season, as they clinch the Central Division title, while D+E falls to 3-4.
Frostburg took the lead within six minutes, as first-year Toni Fiocco-Mizer made her way down the left wing and crossed to the top of the six-yard box, where fellow first-year Lela Clark was able to poke the ball past Sage Christianson in goal and give FSU a 1-0 lead.
D+E then put on some pressure, but didn't have any clear-cut chances, as the Bobcats were solid in defense. Then, on a counter-attack, Fiocco-Mizer again was played through and this time fired a shot past Christianson but hit the post. Junior Lexi Pate was there, however, to strike home the rebound and give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Fiocco-Mizer stayed a threat all half, hitting the post again 10 minutes after the second goal. D+E would continue to control possession, but were unable to find any kind of breakthrough, as the Bobcats took their 2-0 lead into the half.
D+E took the scoring lead to start out the second half with Maria Cabal firing a free kick to the far post to bring the score to 2-1. Frostburg was quick to answer, as Fiocco-Mizer was played clean through from an assist by junior Mina Del Borrello, giving the Bobcats a two-goal lead at 3-1.
The final goal of the night came at the 58-minute mark, as first-year Caroline Burton hit the upper-right of the goal from outside the box, for a final score of 4-1.
First-year goalkeeper Ashley Bilger continued her impressive debut season for the Bobcats, allowing just the one goal while making six saves.
The Bobcats return to action for the final game of the regular season on Friday, April 16 at Alderson Broaddus. Kick-off is set for 6:00 pm, for more information go to www.frostburgsports.com.
