The Bobcast 2021: Episode 14 (4/12/21)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Office of Athletic Communications continues its weekly coaches' show featuring conversations with all its in-season coaches. The podcast-style show gives fans an inside look at all the happenings of their favorite Bobcat teams.

Softball bounced back from being swept by Fairmont State on Wednesday to win all four of their road games on the weekend. They defeated Alderson Broaddus 2-1 and 4-1 on Saturday, before going up to Ohio and beating Notre Dame College 7-0 and 8-3. Aliyah Ramey homered in three of the four games, while Sam Carver added a couple home runs of her own. They continue a busy week with doubleheaders on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, all at Bobcat Field.

Baseball faced Alderson Broaddus three times over the weekend, with their fourth game canceled due to weather. The Saturday doubleheader was split between the sides, with AB taking game one 17-1 and FSU coming back to win game two 8-5. The Battlers took the Sunday rubber match 14-4. They are back in action Wednesday on the road at West Virginia Wesleyan before returning to Bob Wells Field for a four-game weekend series against Wheeling.

Men's and women's tennis both fell on Tuesday against Salem, the men falling 7-0 and the women losing 5-2. The men then fell in a close match against Mount Aloysius on Sunday 4-3. Origen Grear picked up a singles win and a doubles victory with Geoffrey Goldring. Mason Hordubay and Tim Goldring combined for a doubles win, with Tim also winning his singles match. Both the men and women return to action Wednesday for a home tilt against Fairmont State, before going on the road Sunday against Millersville.

Acrobatics and Tumbling wrapped up their impressive first season at FSU, making it to the MEC semifinals after defeating West Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday night. They would lose to Fairmont in the first round of the tournament on Friday, before competing in the individual event finals on Saturday. Of the nine finals they were selected for, they picked up five victories. Additionally, Abbie Baker was named first-team all-MEC, while Alexis Palmieri and Laiken Spahr were named second-team honorees. They were the first Frostburg team to make an MEC tournament, this being the school's second year at Division II.

Men's soccer fell in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon, losing 1-0 to West Virginia Wesleyan on a goal scored with eight seconds left in regulation. Their final game of the season will be played Friday night at Bobcat Stadium against West Liberty.

Women's lacrosse had an impressive week, defeating Davis & Elkins 14-7 at home on Thursday, then traveling to Notre Dame (Ohio) and beating the Falcons 21-9, getting the Bobcats joint-top in the standings with NDC. Summer Cavey capped an impressive week with seven goals, four assists, six ground balls, four caused turnovers, and nine draw controls. Whitney Crosby finished the week with 25 saves against just 16 goals, upping her win total to five games against just two losses. The team is on the road this week, traveling to AB on Wednesday and Charleston on Saturday.

Track and Field featured Morgan Mathews competing in the heptathlon Thursday and Friday at Mt. Saint Mary's, earning a respectable 6th place against Division I opposition. The team then traveled to West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, with the men's team picking up two victories among 15 top-five finishes. The women earned one victory, with seven top-five places. Both teams are back on Saturday as they travel to Charleston, as teams begin preparing for the conference meet in early May.

Football got back in action for the first time since March 20, as they shutout AB 55-0, the program's first shutout since October of 2018 and their first in Division II. Graham Walker had an impressive day at QB, throwing 16-23 for 173 yards and three TDs, while rushing for 39 yards. Malik Morris was his favored target, catching six passes for 116 yards and a TD. The defense was led by Zach Strand, with seven total tackles, three and a half tackles for loss, and two sacks. They play their final game of the season Saturday at UNC Pembroke.
