Baseball Splits Battlers at Bob Wells Field

FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State baseball team split their Saturday doubleheader with Alderson Broaddus, as Frostburg dropped game one 17-1 and came back with an 8-5 victory in game two. The split puts FSU at 8-12, while the Battlers sit at 6-10 on the year.

AB came out on fire in game one, scoring in every inning except for the seventh. The lone Bobcat run came with two outs in the third inning. Senior Ryan Roell singled to left and then stole second. Junior Bryce Jackson was then hit by a pinch, bringing up fellow junior Andrew Smith. Smith lined a single to right, scoring Roell from second.

The Bobcat bats came alive in game two, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning, after the Battlers had taken a 1-0 lead. Junior Jack Maruskin led off with a walk, then stole second and third after Roell flied out to center. Maruskin scored on an RBI single from Jackson. Smith followed with an infield single to third, then he and Jackson both advanced on a throwing error from Lane Casto. Sophomore Jack Lawrence brought Jackson home on a single, giving FSU the first lead of the day 2-1. First-year Chase O'Dell then came to the plate and smacked a two-run single up the middle to give the Bobcats a four spot in the inning.

Senior Franco Velasquez pitched a 1-2-3 second inning, getting the hot bats to the plate again. Senior Mitch Fyffe hit a leadoff triple to right, then was brought home by a one-out Roell single. Roell would steal second before Jackson popped out to short, bringing Smith to the plate with two outs. The Bobcat catcher got a hold on a pitch from Dean Kirby, launching a two-run homer over the right field fence, ballooning the Bobcat lead to 7-1.

After the second, the Bobcat bats cooled off, with AB chipping away at the lead, scoring two in the third and another two in the sixth, dwindling the FSU lead to 7-5.

Frostburg added a big insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, helped out by a Battler error. Junior Josh Netterville earned a hard-fought single up the middle after battling reliever Josh Derocher, then got to second on a wild pitch. Fyffe then singled to center to get Netterville to third, forcing a Battler pitching change. Bradan Mullenix got Maruskin to strike out and thought he had the second out of the inning on a pop-up to left field from Roell. Left fielder Cameron Sheets, however, dropped the ball as he ran in to make the catch, scoring Netterville from third and giving the Bobcats an 8-5 lead.

First-year Nicholas Botsaris, who came on in relief of Velasquez in the sixth, worked his way out of allowing runners on first and second with one out to earn the first save of his collegiate career.

Both teams are schedule to play again Sunday, April 11, back at Bob Wells Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m., for more information head to frostburgsports.com.
