FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State baseball dropped its home game on Sunday afternoon to Alderson Broaddus, losing by a final score of 14-4. The loss drops the Bobcats' record to 8-12 on the season.
The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, however heavy rains after the conclusion of game one forced the second game of the day to be called off.
First-year James Stefanowicz got the start on the mound for the Bobcats and was able to strand two runners on in the top of the first inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Stefanowicz induced a ground ball to shortstop to end the inning.
The second inning was where the Battlers did their damage. AB pushed across seven runs in the inning, all of which were unearned. The Bobcats started to chip away at the deficit in the bottom half of the inning. After first-year Justin Jimenez was hit by a pitch, first-year Chase O'Dell brought him home on a double to left-center field, making the score 7-1. After a flyout from junior Nick Benitez allowed O'Dell to advance to third, junior Josh Netterville lined an RBI single to center to make it a 7-2 AB lead.
AB would push four more runs across in the fifth inning, three of which on a Cameron Sheets home run to left field to make the score 11-2. Frostburg would get one back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Jack Lawrence to make it an 11-3 game.
Three more Battlers crossed the plate in the sixth inning. Brandon Gutierrez singled home a run, and Taylor Cook followed with a sac fly to make the score 13-3. Lane Casto was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning, allowing the final run of the day for AB to cross home plate. Frostburg tallied another run in the bottom of the sixth, as Jimenez scored on a throwing error by first baseman Brock Stewart to make it a 14-4 game.
The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Buckhannon to face West Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
