Bobcats Drop Season Opener at Home to St. Mary’s College

FROSTBURG, Md.  – The Frostburg State field hockey team opened their season with loss at home against St. Mary's College with a final score of 3-1.

The Bobcats celebrated three seniors before starting the game. Same Coffey, Gabby Rachuba and Brooke Lafayette have been a mainstay in the Bobcat lineup since arriving in Frostburg, where they have combined to start in 168 games.

The game started with a battle for possession until St. Mary's attempted a shot on goal that went just wide, just under the five-minute mark.  Frostburg swung momentum into their favor when advancing the ball into circle and drawing a corner. Junior Taylor Hackett was able to find Coffey for a goal to give the FSU the lead. The first quarter ended with an FSU lead 1-0.

Frostburg had another chance to add to the lead on a shot by Rachuba that was saved by the Seahawks. St. Mary's capitalized by adding a goal of their own to even the score at 1-1.

The third quarter saw the Bobcats on the defensive and being out shot five to one.  Junior Maggie Haupt had three saves in the period to keep the game tied at a goal apiece.

In the final period the Seahawks were able to capitalize on their offensive pressure by adding two goals. The game ended with a score of 3-1.
