BECKLEY, W.Va- The Frostburg State men's soccer team went on the road for the first time this season, falling to the Concord Mountain Lions 1-0. The game was played at the YMCA Cline Complex in Beckley, rather than in Athens where Concord is based.
Frostburg had the first opportunity of the game, as senior Randy Putnam shot straight at Mountain Lion goalkeeper Sean Monro. Concord then went on the attack, forcing junior Joel Assal into a couple of saves from Daniel Culverwell.
The Mountain Lions made their pressure count as Diego Marti Perez converted a chance from eight yards out to give Concord the 1-0 lead. Both teams traded chances with 13 minutes left in the half, with both goalkeepers making a save a piece before halftime. The second half started slowly, with each team feeling one another out, as Frostburg had the first chance, but junior Vaughn Phillips could only shoot right at Monro.
Concord almost put the game beyond reach with 13 minutes remaining, as the Bobcats gave the ball away on a free kick in their defensive half. Assal made a fantastic save one-on-one against Tyler Bubb to keep the Bobcats in the match. Â
Neither side was able to create any meaningful chances until the Bobcats earned a free kick 25 yards from goal with seven seconds left in the match. The ball was swung in, but a scramble in the goal mouth only resulted in the ball being cleared away, giving Concord the victory.
The result means that Frostburg falls to 1-2 on the year, while Concord earns their first win of the year, with their season also at 1-2.
Frostburg State returns to the pitch Sunday, March 14, as they travel to Philippi, West Virginia to take on the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus. Kick-off is set for 2 PM. For more information head to frostburgsports.com.
