PHILIPPI, W.Va.- The Frostburg State men's soccer team got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, defeating Alderson Broaddus 3-1.
Frostburg was able to get on the board first, scoring inside 10 minutes as senior Will Macomber pounced on a loose back-pass, squeezing his finish past Battler goalkeeper Diego Gomez.
The lead only lasted a couple minutes however, as a long punt from Gomez found its way to Andres Melendez, who scored past junior goalkeeper Joel Assal. Both teams traded chances for the majority of the half, with neither goalkeeper overly troubled.
The game had its most heated moment when AB defender Joshua Gabriel slid in hard on a tackle, which resulted in a scuffle between the two teams. Gabriel and Bobcat senior Randy Putnam were booked for the incident, however Gabriel received a second yellow for the tackle itself, leaving the Battlers with 10 men to finish the game.
Frostburg was able to take advantage of being a man up six and a half minutes into the second half. Pressure from the Bobcats up the pitch resulted in junior Daniel Juresic bringing the ball under control and firing a shot from outside the box past Gomez to give Frostburg the lead again.
The Battlers were inches away from equalizing after a chance off a corner kick forced Assal to smother a shot. The resulting rebound fell to Melvrik Fernandes, who whipped a shot over Assal and bounced off the crossbar.
Seven minutes later, AB almost got in behind the Frostburg defense, but first-year Isaiah Dell made a crucial sliding tackle to preserve the Bobcat lead. Both teams traded chances throughout the second half, with junior Vaughn Phillips getting the clearest opportunity as he raced into the box, but Gomez came out well to smother the ball.
Frostburg put the game away with four and a half minutes remaining, as Juresic picked up his second goal of the afternoon. First-year Alex Grasso collected a long free kick from Assal and played a pass to Juresic, who fired a shot on his weaker left foot into the bottom corner, sealing the victory.
The win gets Frostburg back to .500 on the season at 2-2, while AB loses its first game on the year to fall to 0-1. The Bobcats are back in action March 28, when they travel to South Euclid, Ohio to take on the Notre Dame Falcons. For more information head to frostburgsports.com.
