WHEELING, W.Va.- The Frostburg State women's soccer team lost their first game of the season to the Wheeling Cardinals 2-0 on Friday night. The loss drops FSU to 2-1-1, while the Cardinals get their first win and sit at 1-3 on the year.
Â
The teams traded some half chances early on, with Wheeling goalkeeper Jaci Wilson and FSU first-year Ashley Bilger each making comfortable saves.
Â
Frostburg's best chance to score in the first half came 17 minutes into the game, as junior Lexi Pate was played through by junior Audra Curtin, however Wilson made an excellent sliding save to keep FSU off the score sheet. Wilson made another good save with 18 minutes remaining in the half, as first-year Lela Clark tried to poke home a rebound off a corner kick, but Wilson was able to fall on the loose ball.
Â
Wheeling would take the lead going into halftime, as they stacked the box on a corner kick, Bilger wasn't able to get her hands to the ball, and Paige Orbell tapped it into an empty net.
Â
10 minutes into the second half, Frostburg looked to have scored on a shot from Caroline Burton, however the ball was cleared off the line by a Cardinal defender to keep Wheeling in the lead.
Â
Wheeling would double their lead in the 63
rd minute, as a long ball played over the top caused confusion between Bilger and her defense, leaving Braedynn Porter a shot into an empty net from the top of the 18.
Â
Toni Fiocco-Mizer tried to get the Bobcats on the scoreboard with 16 minutes remaining, but her shot went just over the crossbar after she had made an excellent, mazy run. FSU got close again with nine and a half minutes left, as junior Audra Curtin was played through, however Wilson was there again to thwart the Bobcats and earn her clean sheet.
Â
Frostburg returns to action Friday, March 26, as they return to Bobcat Stadium to take on the Notre Dame Falcons. Kick-off is set for 6 PM, for more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
