FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team fell in a home match on Tuesday night to Wheeling 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-14). The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-6 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 6-1 in 2021.
Junior Raven Pratt got the scoring started for the Bobcats in the first set, slamming home a kill to tie the set 1-1 early on. Later in the set with the Bobcats trailing 8-2, FSU picked up four of the next six points to close the gap. Junior Jackie Sterenberg was responsible for three of those points, picking up a trio of kills all off of assists from sophomore Edwyna Lainez. First-year Beverly Braun also helped the Bobcats draw closer during the run, registering her first of six kills in the first set to make it 10-6 in favor of Wheeling. After the Cardinals regained control of the set, Frostburg State notched four straight points while facing the set point to make the score 24-16. A kill from Wheeling's Kaitlin Gawelski stopped the Bobcat surge and gave Wheeling the first set victory.
The two teams traded blows in the second set, with Frostburg countering any run that Wheeling created. Midway through set number two, a kill from Braun tied the score at 14-14. Wheeling responded with three straight kills to go up by three, prompting a timeout from Bobcats head coach Kylie Heyne. Frostburg would respond out of the timeout, picking up three of the next four points to pull back within one. The Cardinals would pull away late in the set, claiming five of the set's final seven points to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 10-8 lead early in set three, forcing a Wheeling timeout. Braun fueled the Bobcats by registering three kills during the run, with Sterenberg and Michael pitching in with two apiece early in the set. Wheeling would find a way to bounce back later in the set, eventually pulling away to take the third and final set to win the match.
Braun registered her fifth straight double-double, totaling 14 kills and 15 digs on the night. Braun has now led the Bobcats in kills in each of the last four games. Michael and Sterenberg also contributed to the attack, tallying nine and eight kills, respectively. First-year McKenna Houser had exactly 15 digs for the fourth consecutive match, and Lainez finished with 33 assists for the second straight match.
The Bobcats return to action this Friday when they hit the road to take on West Liberty. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. For up-to-date information, or to watch the game or follow live stats, go to
