FROSTBURG, Md.- Frostburg State women's soccer played out a 1-1 draw with Fairmont State on Saturday evening at Bobcat Stadium, as the team celebrated senior day for Stephanie Vigezzi, Mina Del Borrello, Kori Striano, Heather Finney, Lexi Pate, Abbey Dennis, Audra Curtin, and Mackenzie Folch.
Both sides traded early chances, with Kiera Kuzinski forcing Vigezzi into an early save, then Curtin responded with a shot at Taylor Kennedy in the Falcon goal.
Finney then had a great shot from distance that just clipped the top of the crossbar, keeping the score at 0-0. The tie would not stay long, as Kuzinski whipped in a shot on her left foot that went over Vigezzi and into the far corner for the 1-0 lead.
Frostburg would respond with a number of shots, as Curtin forced Kennedy into a fingertip save. Fairmont thought they would take the lead into the half, but with a minute and two seconds remaining, freshman Cat Smith buried a header off a corner from freshman Keely Knotts to tie the score going into the second half.
The Bobcats started the second half strong, with sophomore Toni Fiocco-Mizer threatening the Falcon goal on a couple occasions. Fairmont then had a couple good chances, with Jessica Schneider forcing freshman keeper Katie Sterne into a save before crashing a shot off the crossbar 30 seconds later.
Neither team was able to create meaningful chances, taking the game into overtime. In the first overtime, Fairmont was happy to sit back and let Frostburg have the majority of possession without creating much offense.
In the second overtime, Frostburg came close to the winner, but Fiocco-Mizer's header was straight at Kennedy, finishing the match in a 1-1 tie.
That brings the Bobcats' regular season record to an end at 11-5-2, while Fairmont finishes at 7-7-3. Frostburg will host an MEC semifinal game next Friday, November 12 with the time scheduled at 5 p.m. against the winner of the West Virginia State vs Charleston (WV) match on Tuesday evening.
