FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team fell short in their home opener against Shepherd on Wednesday evening in Bobcat Arena, as the final score on the night was 76-64.
The Rams opened the game by hitting a three-point shot that was quickly answered by junior Torrin Stephens with a score in the paint. Just before the 15-minute mark, senior Desmond Rene came up with a steal and finished the play off with a layup to make the score 11-8 Rams. The Bobcats took their first lead of the game at the 10:20 mark when junior Bo Schene found senior Sean Patterson for a layup, making the score 17-16 Bobcats. Both teams traded baskets for the rest of the half with Shepherd going into the half with a one-point lead at 38-37.
After two buckets from the Rams to open the half, junior Justin Bailey hit the front end of two free throws to make the score 42-38 Rams. Before the midway point in the second half the Bobcats had back-to-back buckets from junior Micheal Tate Jr. and Schene to get them within three. Stephens had a chance to tie the game up with a little more than eight minutes on the clock, but only converted one of his two attempts from the charity stripe, making the score 51-50 SU. With 5:14 on the clock, sophomore Jaylon Johnson hit a three to make it 58-56 Rams. Johnson again hit a big three with less than two minutes to pull the Bobcats back within three at 67-64. FSU would not be able to catch the Rams over the last couple minutes, with a final score of 76-64, with many of Shepherd's final points coming at the free throw line.
Johnson let the Bobcats with 14 points and 3 assists, with Schene leading the team in rebounds by pulling in six boards.Â
The loss moves Frostburg to 0-3 on the early season, while the Rams are now 2-1. FSU returns to the court when they open MEC play on the road at West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday November 20 at 4 PM.
