Women's Soccer Narrowly Beaten in MEC Championship Game

BECKLEY, W. Va.- The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team narrowly fell in the MEC Championship game to Concord on Sunday afternoon by a score of 1-0, with the lone goal coming on a penalty kick in the second half.

The game began with Frostburg on the front foot, creating a couple good attacking chances but not truly threating the Mountain Lion goal. Concord then took control of the match, working possession within FSU's half and working several shots, but their only shots on goal were straight at sophomore keeper Ashley Bilger.

On 36 minutes, Frostburg created their best chance, as sophomore Toni-Fiocco Mizer charged at CU's back line, but her left-footed shot was too close to Leah Marsh in goal, keeping the score at 0-0 going into the half.

Once again in the second half, the Bobcats came out well, with Fiocco-Mizer getting another shot on target, followed by a couple shots from Leah Foster that Bilger was equal to. Both goalkeepers then made back-to-back saves in the 58th minute, with Rachel Bell getting the chance for the Mountain Lions and senior Audra Curtin forcing a save from Marsh for FSU.

The difference in the match would come in the 60th minute, as senior Abbey Dennis was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, giving Concord a penalty which MEC Offensive Player of the Year Yasmin Mosby stepped up to convert and take the 1-0 lead.

Frostburg threw waves of attacks at the Mountain Lion back line, but CU stood firm and kept the Bobcats in check to see out the match and win the MEC Tournament after winning the MEC regular season crown.

Senior Mackenzie Folch and Fiocco-Mizer were named to the All-Tournament team. Folch had strong defensive performances against both Charleston (WV) in the semifinal and Concord in the final, while Fiocco-Mizer scored Frostburg's first goal against the Golden Eagles and provided the cross that led to the own goal that won the match in overtime.

The loss ends Frostburg's season at 12-6-2, while Concord improves to 17-0-3 as they await their ranking for the NCAA tournament. The appearance was Frostburg's first in the MEC Championship game, having made the MEC semifinal in the 2020 season as a part of back-to-back division titles in just their third season at the Division II level.
