FROSTBURG, Md- The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team secured a spot in the MEC Championship game with a 2-1 win over Charleston (WV) at Bobcat Stadium on Thursday night.
Â
The game opened with a great early chance for sophomore Toni Fiocco-Mizer as she ran through one-on-one but couldn't beat Golden Eagle keeper Kaylee Hensley. Charleston then created some chances, the best one on a shot from Sydney Cavender that was well-saved by sophomore Ashley Bilger in the upper left side of the goal.
Â
UCWV would control a lot of possession without creating many other clear-cut chances, as the FSU defense stayed strong throughout the first half. Towards the end of the half, Fiocco-Mizer created another opportunity on a mazy run but was again thwarted by Hensley, as was sophomore Lela Clark just two minutes later.
Â
In the second half, Frostburg got off to a quick start, as a mistake at the back from Charleston allowed Fiocco-Mizer in one-on-one, as she beat Hensley this time to put the Bobcats ahead 1-0. Five minutes later, however, the Golden Eagles would equalize on a long free kick that was headed in by Keira Hill. Freshman Keely Knotts and senior Audra Curtin would get their chances at Hensley but could not find the lead as the game went into overtime.
Â
Frostburg dominated the first overtime period, getting the ball into several attacking positions. The winning goal came by way of Fiocco-Mizer getting into a crossing position, as her ball into the box was deflected into the goal by a Charleston player, giving FSU the 2-1 win by way of golden goal.
Â
The win puts Frostburg at 12-5-2, while the Golden Eagles end their season record at 15-5. The Mountain East Championship will be played on Sunday, November 14 at 1 p.m. in Beckley, W. Va., as the Bobcats will take on Concord. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
