Baxter’s Career Day Propels Bobcats to Win on Road

Philippi, W. Va. - The Frostburg State Bobcats captured victory in a rainy afternoon contest on the road against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers by a score of 45-7.

After the Bobcats went three and out on the first drive of the game, the Battlers would block the punt and get the ball deep in Bobcat territory at the 30-yard line. Eight plays after that, the Battlers would take an early 7-0 lead and it would be the only points that AB would register. The very next drive, the Bobcats would fumble the football and the Battlers would take over deep in FSU territory once again. After forcing a punt, the Bobcats would get the ball back and get the offense going.

After starting at their own 10-yard line, the Bobcats would march down the field and tie the game up when redshirt freshman Graham Walker rushed the ball in from three yards out. Moving into the second quarter, things would pick up for the defense. Redshirt freshman Jeremiah Baxter would pick off the first pass of the quarter and return it 24 yards, which would spark his career day. After two more consecutive turnovers following the interception, junior Josh Maxwell would rush into the end zone from 29 yards out, putting FSU up 14-7.

The very next drive for AB, Baxter would jump a route and intercept his second pass of the afternoon, this time with no return. The Bobcats would add ten more points before the end of the first half, when senior Malik Morris would catch a 33-yard touchdown pass from Walker to increase the score to 21-7. With a few seconds to spare, sophomore Dayne Koontz would tack on three more points with a 37-yard field goal sending the Bobcats into halftime up 24-7.

Into the third quarter, the Bobcats would score on their first drive of the second half when junior Nate Forte would rush into the end zone from five yards out to push the lead 31-7. On the very next drive, Baxter would strike for his third interception after picking another one away from AB for a returning of 35 yards. This would calm the action down a bit until the beginning of the fourth quarter.

On the first drive of the fourth, senior Malcom Facey would rush in from two yards out to add points once again for the Bobcats, making the lead 38-7. Three drives later, Baxter would get around the AB blockers on a punt and he would return a blocked punt for a touchdown to increase the lead to 45-7. This would bring the scoring to a close in a contest that featured plenty of turnovers.

Between both teams the contest combined for 10 turnovers, five from each squad. The win propelled the Bobcats to 8-1 (7-1 MEC) on the year, and Alderson Broaddus dropped to 1-8 (1-7 MEC). The three interceptions in a contest by Baxter broke a record that stood since 1996 when Ron Wallace picked off three passes at Wesley. The Bobcats return to action on November 6 when they host West Virginia Wesleyan.
