CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Frostburg State Field Hockey team defeated Queens University of Charlotte 5-3 on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.
The Bobcats started the scoring in the contest when freshman Olivia Wenzel took a pass from junior Emily Hughes and shot it by Avian Thompson in goal to put the Bobcats in front 1-0.
The Royals would strike back in the second quarter as Millie Eaton-Jones fired a shot by Frostburg's junior keeper Madison Manalansan to even it up at 1-1. A few seconds later, sophomore Zoe Reading put the Bobcats back on top after she took a pass from sophomore Heidi Van Dyk and finished past Thompson. Frostburg would add two more before the half as Van Dyk scored a pair of goals on assists by sophomore Ashlyn Cave and Reading to push the Bobcats' lead to 4-1 going into the half.
Queens would add two goals in the second half to make the game close again, but freshman Macy Layfield put the Royals away by sneaking a goal by Marlee Geppert off a pass from Wenzel to make the score 5-3.
Van Dyk led the Bobcats with her two goals and an assist, while Manalansan made five saves in goal.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 2-15 on the year while Queens drops to 7-11. Frostburg will be back in action Sunday, October 31 to wrap up their season as they take on Coker in Hartsville, SC at 12 p.m. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
