Frostburg Falls To IUP

CARY, N. C. – The Frostburg State baseball team lost their final game in Cary, N.C. to Indiana (Pa.), 13-9. The win moves FSU to 4-9 on the season while the Crimson Hawks to 1-8 in 2020.

The Bobcats registered 12 hits with first-year AJ Campbell going 2-for-5 with two hits and two runs scored. Campbell also toed the slab for FSU, tossing six innings allowing and only six hits.

IUP jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning off an error, two walks and back-to-back singles to left field giving Indiana (Pa.) the early lead. Frostburg came clawing back in the top of the second inning, scoring sophomore Nick Benitez after he knocked a one-out single. Benitez got into scoring position after sophomore Worthy Hollister blasted a line drive single to right. Senior Mitch Fyffe drove Benitez home after a single to left field making the score 2-1 IUP.

Fyffe drove home another run after reaching on an error by the Crimson Hawks shortstop. Campbell scored after racing around the bags to knot the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning.

A two-out rally in the fifth inning sparked the Bobcat bats. Junior Bret Fogle laced a single into centerfield to start the attack. Junior Bryce Jackson continued his hot weekend by doubling into centerfield scoring Fogle from first. Senior Ryan Roell belted a fly ball into right field that scored Jackson and eventually advance Roell into scoring position making the score 4-2 FSU.

After one run from IUP, the Bobcats started the fifth inning with a single from Benitez. After a fielder's choice from Hollister, FSU stationed one man on the base path. Fyffe walked then stole second, brining sophomore Hayden McLaughlin to the dish. McLaughlin drilled a line drive single to right field scoring two Bobcat runners making the score 6-3 FSU. Fogle followed that at-bat up with a triple to centerfield scoring McLaughlin. Fogle then scored on a wild pitch to grow the Bobcat advantage to 8-3 in the sixth.

In the seventh inning, Hollister reached on an error scoring Campbell who previous hit a double to get into scoring position. FSU's lead grew to 9-4. The Crimson Hawks responded with two more runs to make it a 3-run game, 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh.

Indiana (Pa.) rattled off seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 13-9 advantage heading into the final stanza.
