FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team cruised past visiting Georgian Court University, 14-5 on Thursday night to push its record to 4-0 on the season.
The Bobcats closed the first quarter with four-straight goals and opened the second frame with the first two as they took control early on. The hot start carried FSU to its first 4-0 start since the 2016 campaign when the Bobcats opened that season at 11-0.
Sophomore Jake Bowman scored twice and senior Michael Sipes scored three times during that crucial 6-0 FSU run.
Sipes found Bowman for the game's first tally with 8:23 on the clock in the first before Randy Collins tied the game for the Lions (4-3) a minute and a half later.
Sipes then rattled off three-straight goals for a quick 4-1 lead. Sipes' first goal came at 5:45, Bowman found Sipes at 2:42 and junior Paul Ruppert connected with him for his third goal at 2:42.
Bowman closed the first quarter with a goal off an assist from Ruppert for a 5-1 edge.
Frostburg built its lead to 8-2 at halftime thanks to three scores in the second quarter. Junior Nick Gallagher found sophomore Gavin Schattall just 12 seconds into the period and sophomore Tanner Donaldson scored an unassisted goal at 10:17. First-year Justin Hulse connected with junior Jason Clinton for the final score of the first half with 4:57 to play.
The two schools traded goals in the third period and the hosts tacked on four more in the fourth for the win. Clinton opened the fourth with a goal at 10:09, Ruppert found junior Jeffrey Stallings for a goal at 8:29 and Ruppert called his own number at 7:11.
Frostburg's final score came when first-year Bubba Love assisted a goal from senior Garrett Olds with 1:36 to play.
The Bobcats assisted on 10 of their 14 goals on the night and won 17 of the game's 24 faceoffs. FSU also led in groundballs 50-31.
Sipes finished with five points on 10 shots, while Bowman added four points on six shots. Redshirt sophomore Sam Natvig led the Bobcats with eight ground balls and won 16-of-22 faceoffs. Senior Dante York added seven ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior goalie Jack Marks notched 12 saves and allowed six goals for his fourth victory.
Collins led Georgian Court with three goals, while Tanner Lee handed out two assists.
The Bobcats return to action next Thursday when they play No. 20 Florida Southern at historic Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
