FROSTBURG, Md. – First-year Jordan Kenney scored three times and junior Summer Cavey added two goals as the Frostburg women's lacrosse team dropped a narrow 11-10 contest to Shepherd, Wednesday.
The Bobcats (1-2) never led in the game, but hung tough with the Rams (3-0) all night long.
First-years Cam Sawyer and Camron Baldwin tallied goals late in the opening half that closed a three-goal deficit to just one, 8-7 at intermission. Junior Stephanie King was credit with an assist on each goal.
Cavey connected with Kenney just over two-and-half minutes into the second half for a goal that tied the contest at 8-8.
The Rams' Jordan Sauro scored for the third time on the evening to give the visitors a 9-8 at 20:50, but Cavey answered with an unassisted tally that knotted things at 9-9.
Shepherd tried to pull away after scoring goals at 12:36 and 11:07, but Frostburg again answered when Cavey found King at 5:47 that pulled the Bobcats to within one, 11-10.
Sawyer had a shot with 1:06 saved by Ram keeper Hailey Bennett and Kenney had a shot turned away in the closing seconds as the Rams stole the win.
Despite the loss, FSU outshot Shepherd 28-21, including a 13-6 edge in the second half. Bennet played a vital role for Shepherd as she notched 16 saves to give the Rams the win.
Cavey finished with two goals, two assists, three draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Kenney posted a hat trick with her three goals and King finished with one goal and two assists.
Junior Teresa Stabler stopped four shots while taking the loss in goal.
FSU returns to action on Friday when it hosts Albion at 5:00 pm.
