Bobcats Earn Split; Down Elizabeth City State

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Frostburg State softball team wrapped up its weekend with a 3-1 record after posting a 6-3 win over Elizabeth City State before losing to Chowan 9-0, Sunday.
 
The Sunday split lands Frostburg at 4-4 overall this season after the successful weekend at Chowan.
 
Junior Emily Talbert finished the weekend with two wins in the circle against Elizabeth, while first-year Brianna Powell and junior Aliyah Ramey led Frostburg in hitting. Powell finished the four games with seven hits (7-of-12), five RBI and six runs scored, while Ramey was 5-for-11 with five RBI and a run.
 
Game One
In the first game of the day, the Bobcats rallied from an early deficit to post a 6-3 win over Elizabeth City State.
 
The Vikings plated two runs on a double to left field in the top of the first inning before FSU rallied with one run in the second and two in the third. Ramey doubled home sophomore Amber Keene for the first run in the second frame.
 
In the third, Powell singled home sophomore Ava Gnibus for the first run before junior Kayleigh Krause singled home Powell for the second run and a 3-2 lead.
 
Elizabeth City State tied the game in the top of the fifth with a single run on a stolen base, before FSU sealed the win with three runs in the home half of the inning.
 
Keene plated the first run on a sacrifice fly that scored Powell for the go ahead run and a 4-3 advantage. Krause, the next batter, singled home sophomore Kennadie Batchelor, while Krause scored two batters later on a single from Ramey.
 
Junior Emily Talbert picked up the second win of the weekend against the Vikings. She tossed 4.1 innings with one strikeout, while allowing three earned runs. First-year Shawna Leonard earned the save after fanning five in 2.2 innings while not allowing a base runner. She struckout the side in the sixth frame.
 
Krause and Ramey each drove in two runs, while Powell scored twice.
 
Game Two
Frostburg entered the final game of the weekend have won its previous three games, but Chowan ended the run with a 9-0 win in five innings.
 
The Hawks plated four runs in the second to lead 5-0 before tacking on two more in the third and fourth frames.
 
The Bobcats were held to just two hits, one each from senior Claire Hanlon and Gnibus.
 
Talbert was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs, two earned in 1.1 innings of work.
 
Frostburg is back in action next Saturday at the Queens Tournament as the Bobcats open with Queens on Saturday morning at 10:00 am.
