SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Frostburg State split the doubleheader with Shepherd on Sunday, winning 14-10 in game one and falling 8-5 in game two. The split moves FSU to 3-6 on the overall season while the Rams sit at 7-7 in 2020.
Senior Ryan Roell finished his day going 6-for-8 with 2 home runs and 9 runs batted in. The most RBIs in a doubleheader for Roell in his time at FSU. Fellow senior Mitch Fyffe went 4-for-7 on the day with a triple and 3 RBIs.
Game One
Frostburg emerged from a high-scoring affair with a 14-10 win in a game that featured a combined 24 hits, seven left on base and eight walks.
The Bobcats scored in every inning but the seventh and rallied from an 8-3 deficit with four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Jared Carr hit a two-run homer in the first, while Zach Doss and Daniel Keer each post two-run singles in the second as the Rams built their lead to 8-3.
The Bobcats started their rally with a two-run homer from first-year AJ Campbell in the top of the third that narrowed the gap to 8-5. In the fourth, Roell started things off with a single to center that plated sophomore Nick Benitez to pull within two at 8-6.
Two batters later, Fyffe knotted the score at 8-8 with a triple to center that scored both Roell and junior Bryce Jackson. Sophomore Worthy Hollister gave the visitors the lead for good with a single up the middle that scored Fyffe for the final run of the fourth.
FSU tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 13-8 when Roell smacked a grand slam to right field that scored juniors Bret Fogle, A. Iglesias and Tre D'Amico. Fyffe scored on error in the sixth to set the final at 14-10.
Roell finished the opener with career highs in hits (4), runs (4) and RBI (6) thanks to his grand slam. Fyffe posted a 3-for-4 effort in game one with three RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Chris Roosevelt picked up the win on the mound after tossing 3.0 innings in relief of first-year starter Ben Vok. Roosevelt struck out two and allowed just two earned runs. Senior Caleb Smith pitched the final 2.0 innings and surrendered just one hit.
Game Two
The offense was still sizzling for the Bobcats as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in game two. Fogle reached on an error to started things off, followed by a Jackson walk. Roell stepped to the dish and belted a three-run home run to right field his second home run of the day.
In the bottom of the second, the Rams responded with two runs of their own from a Joey Schwartz two-run home run to centerfield.
FSU tacked on two more runs after an intentional walk to Roell brought Campbell to the plate. Campbell lofted a fly ball over the left field wall to give Frostburg a 5-2 advantage.
Shepherd got the offense going again in the third inning. After a walk and a stolen base, Frostburg registered two outs. The Rams ripped a single into left field driving home two runs making the score 5-4, FSU.
Shepherd's offense sparked for four runs taking an 8-5 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning which was the eventual final score.
