MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Frostburg State softball team won both games on the first day of the Chowan Tournament. The Bobcats won against Elizabeth City State 11-1 and beat Chowan 7-4.
Game One
Frostburg opened the weekend with a dominating 11-1 win over Elizabeth City State. Talbert got the start in the circle for Frostburg and tossed 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and just one unearned run. First-year Shawna Leonard tossed the final two innings and didn't allow a run.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead following the first inning. Sophomore Amber Keene got things going offensively with an RBI single that plated junior Kat Treff and Keene later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0.
Junior Aliyah Ramey made it 3-0 when she scored sophomore Kennadie Batchelor with a ground out to the shortstop. Three batters later, first-year Brianna Powell singled to third base that plated junior Emily Talbert. Powell stole second base and senior Claire Hanlon scored on throw for the 5-0 lead.
The Bobcats tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning. Keene drove in her second run of the day, this time with a ground out to the shortstop that scored Powell.
FSU sealed the win with five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ramey started the scoring with an infield single that scored junior Taylor McCarty for a 7-1 lead.
Powell did the most damage in the frame when she tripled to centerfield that plated Hanlon, Ramey and first-year Shawn Leonard. Powell scored the 11
th run on an error by the Viking infield.
Game Two
Frostburg ended the day with a 7-4 win over hosts Chowan. McCarty got the start in the circle for the Bobcats pitching 2.0 innings with one unearned run. Leonard tossed five scoreless innings registering four strikeouts.
Frostburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Batchelor hit an RBI single to left field allowing Treff to score. A fielder's choice by McCarty drove in Powell and moved Batchelor and Keene up the line. Ramey followed up by hitting a sacrifice fly driving in Batchelor. Keene scored after an RBI from Hanlon to put the Bobcats up 4-0 after the top of the first.
Chowan responded with three runs cutting the Bobcat lead down to one after the first inning, 4-3.
After Chowan tied the game at 4-4, the Bobcats responded with an RBI from Payne driving in McCarty to take the lead 5-4 after three innings. A fielder's choice drove Powell home giving FSU a two run lead 6-4.
McCarty advanced home after Krause was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning to add to the Bobcats lead 7-4 which was the eventual final score.
On the day, Powell went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base while Ramey went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
