CARY, N.C. – The Frostburg State baseball team finished its second-consecutive weekend in North Carolina with a split against Goldey-Beacom, Sunday.
The Bobcats improved to 2-5 overall on the season after dropping game one, 2-1, and taking the second contest 1-0.
In the opener, the Lightning (5-3) broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Cole Collins smacked a single to center that scored Tevin Thomas for the 2-1 win.
Mason Maxwell scored the first run of the ballgame for Goldey when he crossed the plate on a passed ball in the third inning.
Frostburg tied things at one in the bottom of the sixth when first-year AJ Campbell laced a double to left field that scored junior Bryce Jackson.
Campbell led FSU at the plate with a 1-for-3 effort. He was also saddled with the loss on the mound after tossing all 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs, one earned. He fanned six batters and retired the side in the first, second and sixth innings.
In the second match, Frostburg needed just one run to salvage the split. Sophomore Worthy Hollister doubled to center and scored senior Devin Griffith, who also led off the frame with a double.
The Lightning threatened in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on, but senior Caleb Smith posted a strikeout and ground out to end the inning.
Senior Franco Velasquez earned the win after striking out four and allowing just two hits in 5.0 innings. Smith earned the save after tossing the final two outs.
Junior Bret Fogle led the Bobcats from his leadoff spot with two hits on the afternoon.
FSU returns to action next Saturday as it plays a twinbill at Shepherd at 12:00 pm.
