Bobcats Fall to Cardinals

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball celebrated three seniors for senior day against the Wheeling Cardinals. The team fell to the Cardinals in a 62-58 matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats now sit at 4-22 overall and 3-17 in conference play.

The first quarter started out with a three-pointer from graduate Victoria Diggs. After Wheeling took the lead early on, the Bobcats went on an 8-7 run with three points from first-years Ciara Thomas and Ariana Briggs-Hall, and two from Diggs. The offensive surge late in the first quarter put the Bobcats within one closing out the quarter at 12-11.

Frostburg continued their offensive run into the second quarter when an 11-7 run powered them to a 22-19 lead. Six points from Briggs-Hall helped the Bobcat effort. Later in the quarter a jumper by senior Sydney Stotler at 2:15 would increase the Bobcats' cushion as the lead inflated to 28-21. A layup by sophomore Anhai Allen would seal the seven-point lead going into halftime at 30-23.

Two free throws and a three-pointer from sophomore Morgan Dombroski kicked off the scoring of the second half. Senior Amanda Emory hit a layup with an assist from Stotler at 6:33 to keep a seven-point lead over Wheeling at 37-30. Allen hit another layup at 4:56 to increase the lead 41-30. Late in the third quarter the Cardinals made an offensive burst and made a 10-0 run to only be down by one and bring the score to 41-40.

Wheeling's Lilly Ritz hit a free throw to tie the game at 41. A 6-2 run from the Cardinals would power them past Frostburg to take the lead by three points. A layup by Thomas would keep the Bobcats within three. A 9-8 run for the Bobcats kept the game close as Emory, Briggs Hall, and Allen all tallied points during a three-minute span. A late three-pointer from Allen put the score at 58-55, but the Cardinals outscored the Bobcats 4-3 in the last 20 seconds to take the win with a final score of 62-58.

Frostburg was led by Diggs and Briggs-Hall in points as the both tallied 11 during the contest. Diggs also led the team in steals with six. Briggs-Hall and Stotler each recorded seven rebounds with Stotler also recording five assists.

Emory tallied eight points during the contest putting her at needing five more points to reach her 1,000th career point.

The Bobcats return to action when they host Davis & Elkins for a 5:30 pm tipoff.
