CUMBERLAND, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team fell to the Charleston Golden Eagles, 69-51, Wednesday night. The loss takes Frostburg to 3-16 overall (2-11 MEC) while Charleston moves to 15-4 overall (10-3 MEC).
The matchup started off with a scoring drought from both sides as the first five minutes of the game only saw eight combined points. Junior Grace Butera started the scoring for the Bobcats as she connected on a jumper at 6:49 in the first off an assist from first-year Ciara Thomas. A run by Charleston found the Bobcats coming from behind as the first quarter would end with a score of 14-6. The Bobcats found scoring from Thomas and graduate Victoria Diggs during the quarter to put Frostburg on the board.
The second quarter started with a boost from Diggs as she hit a three-pointer at 9:13 to bring the Bobcats within five. After a back and forth effort, Diggs hit another three-pointer off an assist from Emory at 8:01 bringing the score to 18-14. Thomas, and sophomores Morgan Dombroski and Anhai Allen, also connected on three-pointers as the quarter winded down bringing the score to 32-25 at halftime.
The second half saw Diggs hit a three-pointer from Thomas to bring the Bobcats within 10 of the Golden Eagles. Over two and half minutes the scoring would be at a minimum but Diggs would have three points and first-year Ariana Briggs-Hall would tally two. Later in the quarter the Bobcats would be even with Charleston as each team would produce nine points, but would bring a score of 50-39 in favor of Charleston. In the last minute of the third quarter Dombroski tallied five points going into the final quarter at 54-41.
Diggs would find the first score of the fourth quarter at 5:42 as she hit a three with an assist from Dombroski. Frostburg State finished the game with a 10-8 run with junior Sydney Stotler tallying four points, and Diggs and Dombroski collecting three each. The Frostburg run would bring the Bobcats to their final score of 69-51.
The Bobcats totaled a season-best 11 three-pointers on the night, including six in the second half.
Frostburg shot 42.3% from beyond the arc and Diggs led the team with 17 points and 50% from three. Diggs also tied a season-best with five three-pointers. Dombroski was second in points with 11 and steals with three.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when it host West Virginia State at Garrett College in McHenry, Md. at 4:00 pm.
