CUMBERLAND, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team hosted Fairmont State on Sunday for their first matchup against the Falcons, but fell 92-70. The Bobcats fall to 3-15 overall (2-10 MEC) while the Falcons advance to 10-8 overall (7-5 MEC).
The first quarter found the Bobcats fighting for the lead as the Falcons immediately took the lead with a three-pointer. Frostburg wouldn't end up on the board until 6:56 with a layup from first-year Arianna Briggs-Hall. The Bobcats took the lead on a late 16-8 run when senior Amanda Emory tallied 10 points at the end of the first quarter. Fairmont made the game close when they closed the first quarter with a three-pointer bringing the score in their favor, 26-24.
The second quarter started with a layup from Emory but would then go on a scoring hiatus for approximately three minutes. Briggs-Hall broke the scoring drought with a free throw giving Frostburg a one point lead at 26-27. Frostburg found themselves fighting back as Fairmont State went on a 13 point run bringing them back the lead at 45-35. Senior Sydney Stotler would close out the quarter by converting on one free throw. The half would close out with Fairmont ahead by ten and a score of 48-38.
Sophomore Anhai Allen converted on a layup at 7:42 of the third quarter, giving the Bobcats their first score of the half. After much back and forth play Emory hit a layup to shrink the Fairmont lead back to 10 halfway through the quarter. Through the quarter Fairmont's lead grew after a 13-6 run. Fairmont's Sierra Kotchman led the Falcons with nine points during the run. The Bobcats would go into the fourth quarter off a good jumper from Stotler at a score of 71-58 for Fairmont.
Fairmont started off the fourth quarter with an immediate free throw. The Bobcats tallied a layup from junior Grace Butera bringing the score to 74-60. Frostburg wouldn't score again until free throws from Emory at 4:54. In the last three minutes of the game Stotler and Emory would both lead the team in scoring with three points each. The game ended on a layup from Fairmont giving the eventual final score of 92-70.
Emory led the team in points with 20 while sophomore Drew Dunathan tallied and led the team with nine rebounds. Graduate Victoria Diggs led the team in assists with eight.
