Bobcats Suffer Late Loss At West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Senior Amanda Emory and first-year Arianna Briggs-Hall each notched a double-double is Frostburg's 67-55 loss at West Liberty, Saturday.
 
The Bobcats (2-14, 1-9) suffered the loss despite hanging tough with the Hilltoppers (7-9, 3-7) for much of the afternoon.
 
FSU outscored the hosts in both the first and third quarters and Frostburg trailed just 31-28 at the break.
 
Late in the third, Frostburg led 42-40 when first-year Kaitlyn Rogers knocked down two free throws and Briggs-Hall tied the game at 44 with the first basket of the fourth quarter. Bobcat graduate Victoria Diggs kept FSU in the game when she connected on a jumper for her eighth point of the game that pulled the visitors to within two at 48-46.
 
From there, the Hilltoppers slowly pulled away from the Bobcats for the win. Olivia Belknap hit a three-pointer at 7:00 and Morgan Brunner added a three at 6:16 as WLU led 54-48.
 
Frostburg had one final push as Briggs-Hall quickly answered with a layup at 6:06 to pull the Bobcats to within four, 54-50, and she hit a jumper at 5:17 to pull FSU to within two at 54-52.
 
West Liberty collected a 6-0 run for a 60-52 lead and the host's lead reached 10, 64-54 with 2:33 to play. Emory scored Frostburg's final three points over the final 3:06 and WLU sealed the win with two late free throws.
 
Emory scored 18 for the Bobcats on 8-of-13 field goals with 10 rebounds, while Briggs-Hall added an even 11 points and 11 rebounds. Diggs totaled eight.
 
The lead changed hands four times on the afternoon and FSU emerged with a 14-10 cushion after the first. Emory hit a jumper at 1:09 in the first for a 12-10 lead and Rogers hit a jumper in the paint for a 14-10 lead at 41 seconds.
 
Early in the second, sophomore Drew Dunathan hit a jumper at 8:23 for a 17-13 lead and Frostburg grabbed its largest lead of the ballgame at 16-10 when Briggs-Hall hit a jumper at 7:56.
 
Frostburg held onto the lead until late in the second when a three-pointer from Brunner gave the Hilltoppers a 27-25 advantage.
 
Diggs opened the third quarter scoring for the Bobcats with a jumper at 8:32 for a 32-31 lead and Rogers late third-quarter free throws gave the Bobcats a 42-40 lead.
 
West Liberty was led in scoring by Belknap with 16 points, while Brunner finished with 14.
 
FSU returns to the floor this Wednesday at West Virginia Wesleyan at 5:30 pm.
