WHEELING, W.Va. – Graduate Victoria Diggs and senior Amanda Emory combined for 36 points, but Frostburg endured a 64-60 loss at Wheeling, Wednesday night.
Diggs totaled 19 individually and Emory finished with 17 as the Bobcats settle at 2-13 overall on the season and 1-8 in the Mountain East.
Khira Burton led the Cardinals with 20 points as the hosts pushed their record to 5-9 overall and 4-5 in the league.
Diggs moved into a tie for 13
th in school history in scoring with her 19 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds with three assists. It was her 11
th time in double figures this winter.
Emory shot 70 percent from the floor (7-of-10) with seven rebounds to go along with her 17 points.
Despite the loss, FSU led in the early moments of the third quarter when Emory hit a layup at 7:37 and first-year Arianna Briggs-Hall hit a layup on the ensuing trip down the floor for a 39-38 lead.
Briggs-Hall again gave the Bobcats the lead later in the third quarter when she hit another layup at 5:18 for a 43-42 cushion. The Bobcats' final lead of the night came with 4:21 left in the third when Emory hit a basket for a 45-44 advantage.
Wheeling led from that point until the final horn, but FSU didn't go away.
Sophomore Anhai Allen hit a big three-pointer for the Bobcats with 1:22 left in regulation that ignited the FSU bench and pulled it to within three at 60-57. Senior Sydney Stotler hit a free throw with 24 seconds left to pull the score to 60-58 and Emory added a late basket to pull the Bobcats to within three.
In the opening half of play, Diggs closed the first quarter with a three-pointer with 39 seconds left and a jumper with three seconds showing that tied the game at 16 after 10 minutes.
Emory opened the second quarter with a jumper off an assist from Allen for FSU's first lead of the night at 18-16. Late in the second quarter, Allen hit a layup for her first basket of the night and Diggs knocked down another three-pointer as Frostburg snared a 35-34 lead.
Wheeling's Iyauna Bonner hit a running jumper with two seconds left to grab the lead for the hosts at intermission, 36-35.
FSU returns to action this Saturday at West Liberty at 2:00 pm.
