WHEELING, W.Va. – Senior Daniel Alexander finished just a point shy of equaling his career-high in scoring as the Frostburg State men's basketball team endured 75-61 defeat at Wheeling in MEC action, Wednesday night.
The Bobcats settle at 6-9 overall with the loss and they are now 3-6 in the MEC.
Alexander poured in 35 points on 14-of-25 shooting with four three-pointers, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. He now has three 30-plus scoring games on the season. Junior Joe Adedayo was second in scoring with 12 points.
The Cardinals finished with three players in double figures. Jarett Haines led the way with 21 points, while Jordan Reid contributed 20. Wheeling won for the third-straight game and improves to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the MEC.
Frostburg jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead inside the first two-and-half minutes. Sophomore Torrin Stephens hit a layup at 19:08, Alexander connected on a three-pointer at 18:03 and Adedayo hit a jumper at 17:27 for the six-point lead.
The Cardinals rebounded with 11-straight points for a 12-7 lead at 14:28. Wheeling continued the surge and led by as many as six in the opening half.
The Bobcats battled back to even the score at halftime. Alexander hit a late three-pointer to tie things at 29 and Adedayo made the final basket of the half to even the score at 31 at intermission.
The Cardinals scored the first basket of the second half and they never trailed again. Reid hit a free throw for the hosts at 10:59 as WU's lead swelled to 10, 49-39.
Sophomore Maurice Carroll hit a layup with 8:35 left that pulled the Bobcats to within eight at 53-45 and a minute later, Alexander hit a layup that pulled the score to nine at 56-47.
John Korte hit a three-pointer for the Cards at the 2:00 mark as the lead increased to 17, 74-57.
Adedayo hit a basket with 43 seconds left and first-year Tyler Rodeheaver knocked down a foul shot with 40 seconds left to bring the final score to 75-61.
The Bobcats return to action this Saturday at West Liberty at 4:00 pm.
