Women Drop Home Opener On Last Second Goal

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State women's soccer team lost a last-second heart breaker on Saturday night as visiting Shippensburg scored a late goal of a corner kick with seconds remaining to defeat the Bobcats, 1-0.

Frostburg and Shippensburg were evenly matched for much of the evening. The Bobcats outshot the Raiders 8-5 in the first half of play, but the Raiders took control of the shots in the second half, 14-4, before Kendall Mikkelsen scored the late game winner at the 89:58 mark. K.K. O'Donnell took a corner kick with just 10 seconds left and the ball was batted around until Mikkelsen sent a header into the top right corner of the net to steal the victory.

Senior Brooke Shehade led the Bobcat attack with five shots and one shot on goal. She had a chance to give the hosts a 1-0 cushion in the 63rd minute but Shippensburg keeper Delaney Shifflett turned away the opportunity. Senior Gwen Schemm contributed two shots and one shot on goal. First-year goal keeper Taylor Longworth tallied three of her four saves in the second half of play to keep Frostburg in the game. She made a diving save in the 81st minute to keep the score at 0-0.

The Bobcats were outshot by the Raiders, 19-12, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Frostburg held a 4-2 edge in saves thanks to the efforts of Longworth.

Frostburg State women's soccer next action comes on Sunday, September 15, when it travels to Eckerd College. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
