Bobcat Men Score Three In MEC Victory

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team got in the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout of West Liberty in Mountain East Conference action.

Three different players found the net for Frostburg as it improves to 1-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league. Sunday's win also marks the first three goals scored for FSU on the season after failing to find the net it the first two contests.

Junior Randy Putnam scored the game winner in the 35th minute off a pass from first-year Tamino Brown.  Just over a minute later, Brown called his own number as he scored his first collegiate goal at 35:45 for a 2-0 lead for the Bobcats.

With less than five minutes to play in the opening period, Frostburg was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the 18-yard box on West Liberty. Junior Robert Riffle was selected to take the PK and converted the chance for FSU's third and final goal.

The Bobcats outshot the Hilltoppers 5-0 during the first 45 minutes of play and carried that 3-0 cushion into the locker room. Senior Alla Tesfu had a shot sail high of the goal in the 30th minute while sophomore Kaps Kapende had a header miss the net in the 32nd minute.

Both teams attempted just two shots in the second half. Riffle had a shot miss wide at 71:25 and senior Sam Bly missed high at 74:52.

Bobcat keeper Joel Assal needed just two saves for his second win and second shutout of the fall.

Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it welcomes Urbana to Bobcat Stadium at 6:30 pm.
