FREDERICK, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team dropped a non-league doubleheader at Hood College on Tuesday. The Bobcats fell in game one 4-1 and endured a late 9-8 loss in game two.
Frostburg (13-13) jumped out a quick 1-0 cushion in the first inning of the opener as sophomore Aliyah Ramey singled home senior Olivia Ford. Ford led off the frame with a single to third before stealing second to get into scoring position.
Hood tied the game at one when Angela Acampora homered to left field to lead off the third. The Blazers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on Bobcat errors while Katelyn Long singled home another run.
Junior starter Katleyn Mehrling suffered the loss after allowing six hits and one earned run in 4.2 innings. Sophomore Emily Moll tossed the final 1.1 innings allowing just one hit.
Ramey and first-year Amber Keene each finished with two hits.
In the night cap, Frostburg burst out of the dugout with eight runs over the first three innings.
Ramey got things started with a homer to center in the first followed a two-run triple from sophomore Taylor McCarty that plated Mehrling and Keene for 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Sam Carver Closed the first inning with a single to right that scored McCarty.
The Blazers answered with two runs in bottom of the first, but the Bobcats added two more in the second. First-year Erica Payne tripled to center that allowed Ford to cross home plate and Ramey later doubled home Payne for a 6-2 lead.
Ford drove in McCarty with a single to center in the third and Payne reached on a fielding error that allowed Carver to score for an 8-2 advantage.
Hood slowly chipped away at the deficit with three runs in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Hood completed the comeback when Cailyn Barthlow doubled home two runs to seal the 9-8 win.
Following their eight runs over the first three innings, the Bobcats posted just three hits over the final four innings.
Moll took the loss in game two after allowing the game-winning double in the seventh. She tossed 0.2 innings and allowed three hits. McCarty started in the circle and surrendered five earned runs on six hits in 3.2 IP.
Ramey finished with three hits, two RBI and a run scored, while McCarty had one hit, drove in two and scored twice.
FSU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Mary Washington at 1:00 pm for a DH on senior day.
