FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg senior Olivia Ford set the single-season stolen base record, but the Bobcat softball team was swept by Mary Washington, 8-5 and 2-0, Saturday on senior day.
The Bobcats have suffered six-straight losses and are now 13-15 overall and 2-4 in the CAC. Mary Washington pushed its record to 17-14 overall and 7-1 in the league.
Ford swiped a base early in game two and she now has 23 for the season, breaking the previous record of 22, set by Brooke Tapman in 2010. Ford is perfect this season at 23-for-23.
Ford also finished the final regular-season weekend series for the Bobcats with three hits in six at-bats with a run scored.
In the opener, the Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after an RBI from Rachel Porchie in the top of the first.
The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the third when Ford scored on a throwing error after a single from sophomore Aliyah Ramey. Junior Claire Hanlon came around to score off a single from first-year Amber Keene to hand the Bobcats the lead later in the inning. Finally, a wild pitch brought Ramey home to hand FSU a 3-1 lead after three innings.
FSU later increased its lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Carly Wirth drove in first-year Erica Payne and junior Sam Carver scored on a throwing error.
The Eagles rebounded for the game-one victory with six runs in the top of the fifth. The first two runs came without an out on the scoreboard and Courtney Shea singled home the final two.
Junior starter Kaitlyn Mehrling took the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, in 4.1 innings with one strikeout. Sophomore Emily Moll tossed the final 2.2 innings with just three hits and one unearned run.
In the nightcap, Rachel Porchie singled home a run in the third and Hannh Bruns doubled home the final run in the fifth.
Frostburg managed single base runners in the first and fourth frames before loading the bases in the fifth. First-year Erica Payne singled to lead off the inning before sophomore Sam Carver and Ford reached on singles. However, a force play at home play and a fly out to right field ended the Bobcat threat.
Sophomore Taylor McCarty suffered the loss after tossing all 7.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing five hits and two earned runs.
The Bobcats are back in action on April 15 as they take on conference opponent Salisbury at home with a 1:00 p.m. start.
