Bobcats Fall in Twinbill Against UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped its doubleheader against Capital Athletic Conference foe Mary Washington on Saturday, April 6. The Eagles took game one, 12-4, and the Bobcats won the second game, 11-7.

The Bobcats now sit at 11-11, 1-9 against CAC opponents, while the Eagles move to 9-12, 3-7 in conference play as well.

Game One

Bobcat junior Colby Lee and Eagle senior Hank Biggs matched zeros in the first three innings of the game, as Lee allowed just three hits and Biggs allowed only one. The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning, putting up a six-spot, highlighted by a two-run single from senior Tyler Ray.

UMW added four more runs in the sixth inning, two of which came on RBI doubles from Garrett Lyon and Stephen John, increasing its lead to 10-0. The Bobcats responded by scoring three runs in the seventh inning, two on an Eagle error and the other on a RBI single off the bat of junior Mitch Fyffe, cutting the Bobcat deficit to seven runs.

The next half inning, Mary Washington plated two more runs on a Marcel Barre single. Bobcat sophomore Duncan Poler scored senior Nick Fuhrmann in the home half of the eighth, but that was all as the game ended in a 12-4 final in favor of UMW.

Lee tossed 4.0 innings, allowing six runs, one earned, on six hits.  Biggs went 7.1 innings for the Eagles, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits striking out seven for his fifth win of the season.

Offensively, the Bobcats were led by Poler, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run. His classmate, Tre D'Amico also went 2-for-3 with a run in the effort.

Collectively, the Eagles tallied 14 hits. Centerfielder Norman Holcomb went 3-for-5 with two runs and drove in three. Christian Hague also collected three knocks while scoring three runs in the victory.

Game Two

The Eagles picked up where they left off, scoring a run in both the first and second innings before the Bobcats responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the second. UMW then scratched across three more runs to take the lead again.

FSU clawed out three more runs of their own in the third inning after Fyffe laced a ball over the left field fence driving in three runs making the score 5-5.
After two scoreless innings, Frostburg broke the 5-5 tie with an RBI single from D'Amico after the double from sophomore Bret Fogle.

In a relief effort, senior Chase Delost threw four scoreless innings allowing two hits and fanning seven before coming out for junior hurler Mike Livingston.

The Bobcats held UMW scoreless for five straight innings until the ninth inning, which began with a leadoff triple from Garrett Lyon eventually scoring to tie the game at 6-6.

Frostburg stepped up to the plate with the game tied in the home half of the ninth. Fogle led things off with a walk, his second of the game. D'Amico got the sign from Coach Guy Robertson and dropped down a sacrifice bunt moving Fogle to third base. The following play was a fly out deep enough to allow Fogle to tag up and get 90-feet away.  Fuhrmann grounded out the third basement ending both the FSU threat and regulation.

UMW got a runner in scoring position in the top of the tenth inning before Livingston got an Eagle hitter to chase strike three. The home half of the tenth was uneventful as the Bobcats went down in order.

The Eagles scored five runs in the final inning while Frostburg scored one of their own to end the doubleheader, 11-7 UMW.

FSU takes the field Monday, April 8th to take on Pitt-Greensburg at Bob Wells Field. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. For additional information, live updates, and stats visit frostburgsports.com
