Bobcats Drop Pair Against St. Mary’s (Md.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team hosted Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe St. Mary's (Md.) for a home conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 13. The Bobcats dropped the pair of games, falling in game one 8-3 and in game two, 14-9.

The Bobcats' record moves to 11-13 overall, with a 1-11 mark in CAC play. St. Mary's is now 8-17-1, 2-12 in league action.

Game One

Frostburg State struck first in game one with junior Quin Ambeault singling home senior Jason Paredes with two outs to put FSU ahead 1-0.

St. Mary's responded with a run in the top of the third inning. The Seahawks threatened for more with runners at the corners and two outs, but junior starting pitcher Chase Delost punched out the next batter to strand two SMC runners.

Delost used a strikeout and fly out to escape another two runners on base situation in the top of the fourth.

In the sixth, two throwing errors and a fielding error cost the Bobcats four unearned runs and the Seahawks seized a 5-1 advantage. SMC added a pair of runs on a RBI double and sacrifice fly to extend its lead to 7-1 after the road half of the seventh.

Junior Ryan Roell led off the home half of the seventh with his ninth home run of the season to give the Bobcats their second run of the game.

In the ninth, miscues added a run to both sides as St. Mary's scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to lead 8-2. First-year Worthy Hollister was called upon as a pinch-runner and scored his first collegiate run on an error in the bottom of the ninth.

Delost was charged with the lost despite giving up one earned run over 6.0 innings of work. Senior Dan Ryczek tossed the final three innings for the Bobcats. Frostburg manged just three hits on the day, with Roell's home run as the only to go for extra bases.

St. Mary's banged out 12 hits, seven of which went for extra bases. Starting pitcher Dillon Waters picked up the win, going 6.2 innings and allowing three hits and two earned runs.

Game Two

The Seahawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on two RBI singles, one from Alex Collins and the other from Lucas Kraft. The Bobcats responded, scoring five runs in the third inning to take a three-run lead.

Sophomore Josh Clegg got FSU on the board with a run-scoring single to left field. Ambeault brought home a pair of runs three batters later, driving a double to the right-center field gap to score Clegg and Roell in the inning.

The next half inning, the Seahawks scored seven runs, all with two outs, to retake the lead, 9-5. Brady Waters, Bowen Plagge and Joey Bryner each drove in two runs in the inning for SMC.

After St. Mary's scored two runs in the top of the sixth, Paredes clubbed a two-run homer to the opposite field, bringing the score to 11-7. The home run was Paredes' seventh on the season.

Roell added another home run for the Bobcats, his second between the two games and his 10th of the season, but the late fireworks weren't enough to top St. Mary's, as the Seahawks cruised to a 14-9 victory.

Sophomore leadoff hitter Tre D'Amico reached base four times for FSU, going 3-for-4 with three singles and a walk. He also added a stolen base to his ledger. The SMC offense tallied 19 hits, 18 singles in the game.

The Bobcats conclude their three-game CAC series with St. Mary's tomorrow for a single nine-inning game. First pitch from Bob Wells field is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. For up-to-date information, or to follow along with the live stream and the live stats, visit frostburgsports.com.
