COVINGTON, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team erupted for 11 runs and 16 hits in its 11-8 victory over Southern Virginia at Covington, Virginia on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Ryan Roell hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, putting him tied atop the Frostburg State single-season home run record chart with former Bobcat Matt Greene. The home run was Roell's 14
th of the season, matching the mark that Greene mashed in Frostburg's 2010 season, and ranks second in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) this season behind Christopher Newport's Nicholas Baham (19).
The Knights struck first in game one of the three-game set between the two teams, as junior Ryan Morin singled home a run in the home half of the first inning to give his team a 1-0 advantage. SVU threatened to add to its lead in the second inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Bobcat first-year Nathan Klasmeyer shut the door on the inning, forcing a fly out to keep the deficit at just a single run.
Roell's home run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score at one apiece. In the following inning, Frostburg scored a two-out run after junior Chris Roosevelt singled and later advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. This set sophomore Josh Clegg up with an opportunity to give the Bobcats the lead, and he took it, driving in Roosevelt on a single.
After allowing a first-inning run, Klasmeyer shut down the opposition, tossing 4.0 innings, scattering four hits and striking out two.
Southern Virginia responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth, both on RBI groundouts, to retake the lead, 3-2.
The top of the seventh inning started with a lead-off single off the bat of senior Nick Fuhrmann, followed by a double from junior Devin Griffith. The next batter, sophomore Jared Mouton, drove them both home with a two-run double to retake the lead, 4-3. Mouton scored later in the inning on a Clegg sacrifice fly to increase the Bobcat lead to two runs.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the following inning, scoring three more runs to take a five-run cushion. Fuhrmann drove in a run with a double, followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Griffith. Mouton added the third run on a single to score Fuhrmann.
SVU led off the following half inning with back-to-back home runs by Cole Critchfield and Bridger Taylor, to cut the deficit to three runs. Heading into the ninth, the Bobcats held an 8-5 lead.
The Bobcats put the game out of reach in the final frame, as senior Jason Paredes drove in a run with a single to give FSU a 9-5 advantage. In his final at bat, Mouton drove in two runs with a bases-loaded, two-out single to extend the Bobcat lead to six runs.
The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't overcome the deficit as the Bobcats won the game, 11-8.
Mouton ended the day going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a season-high five RBIs. Roell went 3-for-4 with his homer, two singles and two runs scored, while Paredes also clubbed three hits, drove in a run and scored twice. With runners in scoring position, the Bobcats collectively hit .500 (7-for-14) in the contest.
Frostburg improves to 12-19-1, 2-16-1 in the conference, while Southern Virginia falls to 14-16, 5-13 against CAC opponents.
