Bobcat Home Run Record Broken By Roell In Doubleheader Split

Bobcat Home Run Record Broken By Roell In Doubleheader Split

COVINGTON, Va. – Junior Ryan Roell broke the single-season home run record to highlight Frostburg State baseball's doubleheader split against Southern Virginia this afternoon in Covington, Virginia.  After dropping game one, 14-6, the Bobcats rallied back in game two, 6-5.

Roell now sits alone atop the FSU single-season home run list with his 15th homer of the campaign in the first inning of the today's first game. The previous record holder, former Bobcat Matt Greene, mashed 14 home runs in Frostburg's 2010 season to hold the record for nine seasons.

The junior transfer's 15 homers also moves him into a tie for 10th-place all time in Bobcat history, and ranks second in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) this season.

The Bobcats wrap up their season with a 13-20-1 record, 3-17-1 in league action, while the Knights enter the CAC playoffs with a 15-17 record, 6-14 in conference play.

Game One

Frostburg sophomores Josh Clegg and Tre D'Amico both singled to start the afternoon, setting the table for Roell's record-breaking dinger to give the Bobcats an early lead. The Bobcats added one more in the inning when senior Jason Paredes scored on an SVU error to give the Bobcats a 4-0 advantage before Knights had a chance to swing the bats.

Junior starter Caleb Smith cruised through the first two innings, giving up one hit for the Bobcats before the Knights rallied for three runs in the home half of the third. The Bobcats added a run on a single off the bat of junior Chris Roosevelt in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 5-3.

The Knights responded with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, all with two outs. Junior Ryan Morin drove in three runs alone on a bases-clearing double to knock Smith out of the game. After the dust settled on the inning, the Knights held a 9-5 lead. SVU added another run in the next inning, on a RBI single from outfielder Canon Anderson to extend the Knights' lead to five runs.

Southern Virginia scored two more runs in the seventh inning before D'Amico clubbed a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning, his fourth homer of the season, to make the score 12-6.

Two more Knights crossed the plate in the eighth inning and the Bobcats went down quietly in the ninth to lead to a 14-6 final score.

Overall, the two teams combined for 25 hits, 13 for the Bobcats and 12 for SVU, but the Knights scored 11 of the last 12 runs to lead them to victory.

All but one of the Bobcat starters got a hit, while Roell, Parades and D'Amico each had two knocks. Roell led the team with three RBIs after his early three-run homer. Five Knights had multiple-hit efforts, while Bridger Taylor led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs for SVU.

Game Two
Game two started much like the first with the Bobcats drawing first blood. FSU started the inning with a single from Clegg who moved to second on a sacrifice hit from D'Amico. Fyffe then reached on an error by the shortstop leaving runners on the corners for Roell. The junior responded with an RBI single to score Clegg and give Frostburg a 1-0 lead.
After SVU tied the ballgame 1-1 in the second inning, Frostburg rallied for five runs to take a 6-1 advantage.

The onslaught of runs came from a D'Amico double to centerfield, scoring Clegg from second. Fyffe then walked and brought Roell to the plate with two runners on. Roell golfed a flyball over the wall to make it 5-1 Bobcats, his 16th of the season. Senior Jason Paredes followed him with a solo shot to make it back-to-back home runs.

FSU shut down the Knights offensively until the eighth inning where SVU tallied four runs to cut the Bobcat lead to one.
The ninth inning started with junior Devin Griffith on the mound for Frostburg after getting the final two outs in the eight.

SVU's leadoff man reached base on a hit-by-pitch. The following at bat resulted in a fly out to centerfield. After a sacrifice bunt to put the tying run in scoring position, Griffith got the last out of the inning with a fly out to right field.
Roell ended the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Parades went 1-for-2 with a solo home run.

On the mound, senior Chase DeLost went 4.1 innings allowing eight hits and striking out six batters in a relief effort. Griffith recorded the save in the game, his first of the season. Engle recorded the win for FSU for his second win this season.
