FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team dropped its final home doubleheader of the spring season to Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, losing in game one, 30-5 while dropping the nightcap, 6-0.
Game One
Penn State Harrisburg posted the win in the opener thanks to eight home runs and 29 RBI. Miguel Torres led the Lions with four hits, five runs, seven RBI and three homers.
The Bobcats pounded out seven hits and two homers in game one. Junior Tre D'Amico finished with a hit, two RBI and a run scored, while classmate Ryan Roell posted two hits, two runs and a home run.
PSH plated two runs in the top of the second before Frostburg junior Mitch Fyffe singled home Roell with one out in the bottom of the second that narrowed the deficit to 2-1.
Harrisburg smacked a pair of homers in the top of the third to jump out to a 6-1 edge, before both D'Amico and Roell answered with homers of their own in the bottom of the frame to narrow the score to 6-4.
The Lions took control with 12 runs in the fourth for a 18-4 lead. PSH added 12 more runs over the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Frostburg closed the opener with single runs in the eighth and ninth. Sophomore Duncan Poler drove home Fyffe on a fielder's choice in the eighth and first-year Nick Steury scored classmate Worthy Hollister with a fielder's choice in the ninth.
Senior Dan Ryczek took the loss after striking out two but allowing six earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched. Senior Travis Brashear tossed 2.1 innings and fanned five.
Game Two
The Lions continued their impressive hitting on the day with two more home runs in the nightcap, while limiting the Bobcats to just two hits.
Penn State Harrisburg plated four runs in the third inning, including a three-tun homer by Travis Van Houten. Van Houten added a solo homer to left field in the fifth for the sixth and final run for the Lions.
Fyffe collected both Bobcat hits on the afternoon. With one out in the bottom of the fifth he roped a single into left, while in the eighth he led off with an infield single to second base.
Junior Franco Velasquez took the loss on the mound, allowing six hits and six earned runs while striking out three in 5.0 innings of work. Junior Caleb Smith tossed the final four innings and struck out two, while allowing just one hit.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow when it completes the three-game series with Harrisburg with a nine-inning showdown at noon.
